Salvaterra travels

Tour Salvaterra de Miño

The start of the tour through the center of Salvaterra, starts from the large and bustling Constitucion Plaza, where the noble and modern Salvaterra de Miño Town Hall is located.

A few meters on foot, and right next to the Miño river, which as it passes through the town serves as a natural border with Portugal, it is possible to admire the majesty of its imposing Fortress. This stony construction stands defiantly on a small promontory, a place from which the visitor can enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the town.

Its robust ramparts date back to the 17th century and shelter buildings of great architectural wealth such as the Church of San Lorenzo, with a beautiful Renaissance façade, the Chapel of the Olive, a curious Portuguese-style oratory that is also the gateway to the Fortress. and the Count´s House whose origins date back to the 15th century.

However, the flagship building of Salvaterra is the Doña Urraca Castle, which, along with the walled enclosure, was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1949, making up one of the most representative historical complexes in the entire region.

The Castle of Doña Urraca consists of two even floors in which its groin vaults and its unique double ramp spiral staircase that communicate the different heights of this historic building stand out.

Currently, this castle, of medieval origin, houses, inside, the Science Museum of Viño do Condado do Tea D.O. Rías Baixas, one of the largest spaces for dissemination of enology and viticulture in the Iberian Peninsula.
