There is an archaeological site on the Monte de San Amaro. The natural conditions of the terrain favored the construction of defenses, parapets and moats. In the southern area, remains of Galician-Roman and Roman ceramics abound. Among the collected fragments stands out a piece decorated with rope elements delimited by horizontal grooves, similar to other ceramic remains found in the region.
At the top of the mountain, next to the hermitage, there is a group of cups of different diameters. During this party, celebrated on January 15, water was thrown into the basins after blessing the fields with it.
The folklore related to this place is very varied and rich. There are numerous legends related to Moors, characters from popular mythology.
The parish appears in the donation of Bermudo II to the Compostela Church, as "Liroto".
In this parish the Lira family had its origin, whose stately bond was founded by Ramón Gil in 1524. The extensive family was connecting with others in different parts of Galicia and other peninsular regions.
Lira was very famous for its beef cattle fairs. This data appears in the Cadastre of Ensenada and was also collected by the illustrated Lucas Labrada. This fair was held every 5th and 18th of every month. The fairs were losing economic weight as modernization in agriculture took place.
