The municipality of Salvaterra is marked by its cross-border character, and linked to a river, the Miño, which endows both towns, Monção and Salvaterra de Miño, with their own idiosyncrasies.

Throughout its long history, the inhabitants, on both banks of the river, have established a series of commercial and personal relationships, which have made this territory a unique space, capable of being used economically and for tourism.

As a result of these fluid and inevitable social interactions, the International Bridge was created over the Miño River, which, since March 29, 1995, physically connects the towns of Monção and Salvaterra de Miño. Since then, the construction of this bridge has meant the strengthening of social relations and has favored economic exchange between both municipalities.

In addition, the creation of this bridge has been the germ of new initiatives and cross-border community projects such as the “Eurocidade Monção-Salvaterra de Miño”, an agreement between the two municipalities and the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation Galicia-North of Portugal (GNP-AECT) which was signed on December 13, 2015, at the João Verde Theater Cinema.

In this agreement, key areas of common interest are addressed, especially in the joint promotion of the Miño River, oenology and local gastronomy, as well as the promotion and development of tourism through the dissemination of natural and cultural heritage, and the recovery and creation of tourist routes and trails.

Likewise, the building that once housed the Old Customs House, located in Monção, has been the headquarters of the Eurocidade since 2017. A workspace from which the joint position of the municipalities in their social, tourist, cultural and sports aspects is promoted , and new lines of work are defined to guarantee economic profitability and tourist sustainability over time for both towns.
