Salvaterra Parish

Parish of "SALVATERRA"

This parish is the head of the Salvaterra de Miño town hall.

Its history is marked by the border character of its town. The river acts as a natural border with Portugal and, at the same time, as a link between its people and both banks. The communications made in the past in passing boats and, later in the ferry, are now made through a modern international bridge.

Salvatierra plays a prominent role in the history of the region. The first written documentary reference of the town is collected in the donation of King Bermudo II in 991. In this old document it is called "Lacedurium". San Lorenzo and San Salvador appear as patrons.

During the following centuries it was the scene of various noble struggles and confrontations, such as those of Queen Doña Urraca with her sister Teresa of Portugal.

The name evolved, later being called "Lazoiro" until Fernando II named the town as "Salvaterra". This place name, referring to its border character, indicates that the monarch considered it a strategic enclave for the defense of his kingdom.

Salvaterra would give shelter to such illustrious characters as Queen Urraca but also to others such as the Count of Caminha, Pedro Álvarez de Soutomayor.

In the 17th century, its border character meant that it was a key territory in Spanish-Portuguese confrontations. For sixteen years the plaza was subject to Portuguese troops, being recovered by the Spanish army commanded by the Marquis of Viana. The defensive walls were improved during this stage.

In 1881 the railroad reached Salvaterra, becoming the closest station to Ponteareas and the Balneario de Mondariz.

Today, in the Casal neighborhood, near the site where the “Fort of Santiago de Aytona” was built, the imposing Pazo das Barreiras stands today.
